About this tool
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The standard WHO categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obese. Indian guidelines use lower cut-offs (healthy below 23, overweight 23–24.9, obese 25+) because health risks start at lower BMI in South Asians.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
18.5 to 22.9 using the Asian-Indian cut-offs.
Is BMI accurate?
It’s a quick screening tool. It doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can show a high BMI while being healthy.
