About this tool

A favicon is the small icon in browser tabs, bookmarks and Google’s mobile search results. Browsers still look for /favicon.ico, so this tool builds a real multi-size ICO file containing 16, 32 and 48 px images, plus the PNG sizes used by iPhones (180 px apple-touch-icon) and Android home screens (192 and 512 px) and a matching site.webmanifest.

Upload all the files to the root folder of your website (next to your home page) and paste the HTML tags into the <head>. On WordPress you can instead upload the 512 px PNG under Appearance → Customize → Site Identity. Simple shapes and one or two letters stay readable at 16 px; detailed logos often don’t.

Frequently asked questions

Is the favicon.ico a real ICO file?

Yes. It contains three PNG-compressed images (16, 32 and 48 px), the format supported by all modern browsers and Windows.

Why is the Apple touch icon not transparent?

iPhones show transparent areas as black, so the 180 px icon gets a solid background. iOS rounds the corners itself.

Can I use an emoji as a favicon?

Yes. Type the emoji in the text box. Emoji look different on each device, and the icon is drawn with this device’s emoji style.

Do I need all the files?

favicon.ico alone works in every browser. The PNGs and manifest add sharper icons on phones and when people add your site to their home screen.
