How to use the Typing Speed Test

  3. See your WPM and accuracy when time runs out, then restart to improve.

About this tool

WPM (words per minute) counts every 5 correctly typed characters, including spaces, as one word — the standard used by typing tests. Accuracy is the share of your key presses that were correct, so mistakes you later fix still count against it. Raw speed counts all characters, right or wrong.

For reference, the average person types about 40 WPM. Many government exams set their own speed and accuracy rules (for example 35 WPM in English for some clerical posts), and some count words differently, so check your exam’s notice and practise with the matching test length.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

40 WPM is average, 50–60 WPM is good for office work, and 70+ WPM is excellent. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as speed.

How is WPM calculated?

Correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. A word is standardised as 5 characters so results are comparable across passages.

Can I use this to practise for SSC or court typing tests?

Yes, for speed and accuracy practice. Official tests may use different passages, error rules or software, so also practise in the official format.

Why can’t I paste into the box?

Pasting is disabled so the result reflects real typing.
