How EPF Interest Is Calculated: Monthly Example

· Updated · ZapToolbox guides

EPF interest is calculated every month on your monthly running balance, at the yearly rate ÷ 12, and the total for the year is credited to your account once, after the financial year ends. The credited interest becomes part of your balance and earns interest from the next year. For FY 2025-26, the EPF interest rate is 8.25%, the same as in the two years before.

This guide explains what goes into your EPF every month, the interest formula, a full worked example in rupees, and what your PF can grow to by retirement. Try your own salary in our EPF Calculator.

EPF contribution: employee and employer share

EPF contributions are based on your basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA):

Monthly basic + DAYour 12%Employer to EPSEmployer to EPFTotal into EPF
₹15,000₹1,800₹1,250₹550₹2,350
₹25,000₹3,000₹2,083₹917₹3,917

The common "3.67%" figure (12% − 8.33%) is exact when basic is up to the ₹25,000 ceiling, which EPFO raised from ₹15,000 on 17 September 2026. Above that, if your employer pays 12% on your full basic, its EPF share is 12% of basic minus ₹2,083. Some employers pay only on ₹25,000 (₹3,000 each), so check your payslip or your EPF passbook. If your wages were above the ceiling both when you joined and on that date, you may not be an EPS member, and then the employer's whole 12% goes to EPF. EPS money builds a pension, not a lump sum, so it doesn't earn EPF interest.

EPF interest calculation formula

  1. Find the running balance at each month end (opening balance + contributions so far).
  2. Monthly interest = running balance × rate ÷ 1200 (8.25 ÷ 1200 = 0.006875).
  3. Add up the 12 months' interest. This total is credited once a year.

Interest on the opening balance therefore works out to the full yearly rate, while each month's contribution earns interest only for the months it was in the account. EPFO's exact posting dates can shift a contribution by a month, so your passbook may differ by a small amount.

Worked example: EPF interest at 8.25%

Amit's basic + DA is ₹25,000 a month. ₹3,917 goes into his EPF every month (₹3,000 from him, ₹917 from his employer), and his opening balance on 1 April is ₹2,00,000.

Step 1: interest on the opening balance

₹2,00,000 × 8.25% = ₹16,500 for the year.

Step 2: interest on this year's contributions

MonthContributions so farInterest for the month
1 (April)₹3,917₹26.93
2 (May)₹7,834₹53.86
3 (June)₹11,751₹80.79
………
12 (March)₹47,004₹323.15

The running balances add up to ₹3,917 × (1 + 2 + … + 12) = ₹3,917 × 78 = ₹3,05,526. Interest = 3,05,526 × 8.25 ÷ 1200 = ₹2,100.49.

Step 3: closing balance

Total interest = ₹16,500 + ₹2,100.49 = ₹18,600.49. Closing balance = ₹2,00,000 + ₹47,004 + ₹18,600.49 = ₹2,65,604.49.

From next April, interest is calculated on ₹2,65,604.49. That is how the yearly compounding works.

Over a career, the yearly compounding and salary hikes add up. Here is an estimate for someone aged 30 with a basic of ₹25,000, a 5% salary rise every year, an 8.25% rate throughout, no opening balance and retirement at 58:

These are projections, not promises. The rate is declared every year and has ranged from 8.1% to 8.8% over the last decade. The EPF calculator lets you change every assumption, and the Salary Calculator shows how PF affects your take-home pay.

Is EPF interest taxable?

When is EPF interest credited?

EPFO's Central Board of Trustees recommends the rate, usually in February or March, and the government then approves it. For FY 2025-26, the board fixed 8.25% in March 2026, and EPFO told its offices to credit it after the government approved it in mid-2026. Interest for the whole year shows up in your passbook in one go. A late credit doesn't reduce what you get, because it is still worked out on the year's monthly balances.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?

8.25% a year, unchanged from FY 2023-24 and FY 2024-25. A new rate is declared every year, so check EPFO's latest announcement.

Does the EPS part earn interest?

No. The employer's 8.33% EPS contribution goes into the pension fund and decides your future monthly pension, not your EPF balance.

How is EPF interest calculated for a month's contribution?

It earns interest from the month it is in your account until the year ends, at rate ÷ 12 per month. For example, ₹3,917 that stays in for 12 months earns ₹3,917 × 8.25% = ₹323.15.

Why is my passbook interest a little different?

Contributions are sometimes credited a month late, and the opening balance may include past interest. These timing differences change the figure slightly.
