Passport Size Photo Size in India (35×45 mm) + 4×6 Print
· ZapToolbox guides
The standard passport size photo size in India is 35 mm × 45 mm, which is the same as 3.5 cm wide × 4.5 cm tall. You can fit eight of these photos on one 4 × 6 inch photo print. Our free Passport Photo Maker crops your photo to this size and arranges eight copies on a 4×6 sheet, ready to print at any photo shop.
Below you'll find the size in every unit people ask for, the common rules for how the photo should look, and the exact steps to make a printable sheet.
Passport size photo size in cm, mm, inches and pixels
| Unit | Width × Height |
|---|---|
| Millimetres | 35 × 45 mm |
| Centimetres | 3.5 × 4.5 cm |
| Inches | about 1.38 × 1.77 in |
| Pixels at 300 DPI (for printing) | 413 × 531 px |
| Pixels at 200 DPI | 276 × 354 px |
The pixel values are simple maths: centimetres ÷ 2.54 × DPI. Photo labs normally print at 300 DPI, which is why 413 × 531 pixels is the useful number for printing.
Note on online forms: a size in pixels and KB for an online upload is a different thing from a printed photo. Passport Seva, exam and job portals each set their own upload limits, and these can change. Read the instructions on the portal you're using; don't assume the print size in pixels is what the portal wants.
What should an Indian passport size photo look like?
Official guidelines are published on the Passport Seva website, and visa offices set their own. The points that appear again and again are:
- Recent colour photo.
- Plain white or very light background, with no pattern or shadow.
- Full face, looking straight at the camera, eyes open and clearly visible.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed.
- Face covering most of the frame, with the top of the head and shoulders visible.
- No caps, no tinted glasses, and nothing covering the face.
- Printed on good photo paper, not a computer printout on plain paper.
Before you apply, check the latest photo guidelines on the official portal for your application. Rules on things like glasses and clothing colour can differ between a passport, a visa and an exam form.
Is passport size the same everywhere?
No. 35 × 45 mm is common in India, the UK and many other countries, but some Indian visa and OCI applications ask for a square 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photo, and the US passport also uses 2 × 2 inches. PAN card forms use a smaller photo. Our maker includes presets for these, but always confirm the size printed on your form.
How to make passport size photos and print 8 on a 4×6 sheet
- Take a good photo. Stand about a metre in front of a plain white or light wall, in daylight from a window. Ask someone to hold the phone at your eye level. Avoid selfies; they distort the face.
- Open the Passport Photo Maker and choose your photo.
- Pick the size. Select "India passport / visa (35 × 45 mm)".
- Frame your face. Use the zoom slider and drag the photo so your face sits inside the dashed oval guide, with a little space above your head.
- Choose the sheet. In "Download as", pick 4 × 6 inch print sheet. You can also choose an A4 sheet or a single photo.
- Make photos. Tap "Make photos". The tool shows how many photos are on the sheet (eight for 35 × 45 mm on 4×6) and adds thin grey borders as cutting guides.
- Download and print. Take the JPG to a photo studio or print it at home on 4×6 photo paper.
The photo is processed on your phone or computer. It is not uploaded to our server.
Why exactly 8 photos fit on a 4×6 sheet
A 4 × 6 inch print is about 101.6 × 152.4 mm. Turned sideways, four photos of 35 mm side by side take 140 mm of the 152.4 mm width, and two rows of 45 mm take 90 mm of the 101.6 mm height. That leaves a small gap between photos for cutting. So you get 4 × 2 = 8 photos.
On an A4 sheet, the same tool fits 30 passport-size photos (5 across and 6 down) with small gaps.
Printing tips so the size comes out right
- Print at 100% or "actual size". If the printer setting says "fit to page" or "fill", the photos will be slightly bigger or smaller than 35 × 45 mm.
- Tell the studio it's a 4×6 print (sometimes called a "4R" print). Don't let them crop it.
- Use glossy or matte photo paper, not plain office paper.
- Measure one photo with a ruler after printing. It should be 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall.
- Cut along the grey lines with a paper cutter or sharp scissors.
Changing the background or cropping first
The Passport Photo Maker crops and arranges your photo, but it doesn't remove the background. That's why starting with a plain light wall matters. If your original photo has lots of extra space, you can trim it first with Crop Image, then load the cropped photo into the maker. If you need a specific size in centimetres for some other form, our guide on cropping a photo to an exact size like 3.5 × 4.5 cm explains how.
Need a digital copy for an online form?
Choose "Single photo" in the maker to download one 35 × 45 mm photo as a JPG. If the form also has a KB limit, run that JPG through our Image Compressor with the limit the portal gives.
