About this tool
The calculator adds the service charge (a % of the bill), GST on the bill plus service charge, and a tip worked out on the bill before tax: total = bill + service charge + GST + tip, and each person pays total ÷ number of people. For a ₹2,000 bill with 5% GST and a 10% tip, the total is ₹2,300 — ₹575 each for four people.
Most restaurants in India charge 5% GST on food (hotels with expensive rooms charge 18%). If the bill already shows GST, set GST to 0 and enter the final amount. A service charge is voluntary: under the Central Consumer Protection Authority’s guidelines, restaurants cannot add it automatically or force you to pay it, and a tip is entirely your choice.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip in a restaurant in India?
Tipping is optional. 5–10% is common in sit-down restaurants when service is good; skip it if a service charge is already on the bill.
Is service charge mandatory in India?
No. Restaurants cannot force you to pay a service charge; you can ask for it to be removed from the bill.
What GST is charged on restaurant bills?
Usually 5% (without input tax credit) for standalone restaurants. Restaurants in hotels with room tariffs above ₹7,500 charge 18%.
